Looming

The Black Sheep Cafe in Springfield has been serving up arts and cultural events for 12 years now. The venue will be commemorating that with an annual anniversary show this coming Saturday, Sept. 16th. The bill includes a new trio, Bottom Bracket, that's an "emo/indie outfit with strong punk and math rock influences." (Their music is featured in the interview below.)

Much like the music she helps create, Jessica Knight is an artist who defies simple labeling. As vocalist, lyricist and bassist for the band Looming, she draws inspiration from a variety of source material. She came of age musically in the Southtown Springfield scene, centered around Black Sheep venue and a punk DIY ethos.

Kevin Bradford is one of the founders of Black Sheep, the all-ages, punk music venue on the corner of South Grand Ave. and 11th Street in Springfield.  It’s at the center of a plethora of indie and DIY activities in Springfield’s once-blighted Southtown neighborhood.

For as much as we talk about him and the several things he has a part in ( ie: Black Sheep, F**k Mountain, Looming, South Town Studio...) it's actually pretty amazing Scott and I haven't had Brandon Carnes in-studio yet. He couldn't have come at a better time. This week, he tells us about Looming's record release show on Friday, his incredibly absurd and offensive project called Diaper Rash (which some would also call quality performance art), and what it's been like taking over Black Sheep in Southtown. Tune in!

If you’re not sure what exactly “Southtown” is – imagine you’re driving down South Grand Avenue in Springfield toward Rochester.
