If you're still looking to get in on today's election day action, but aren't registered to vote, you're in luck. For the first time, Illinois is making "grace period" registration available today, on election day.

But the Illinois State Board of Election's Jim Tenuto warns that you can't just show up at any precinct's polling place.

Tenuto advises voters to call first to find out where they can still register, and what identification they need to bring.

"The thing we're warning voters is, 5, 6 o 'clock comes and a voter says 'I didn't ... I wish I would have voted. I'm going to go to my polling place, register and vote.' You can't do that. You have to go to only certain, specific locations."

Whether registering for the first time, or changing your address, it does require identification.

Tenuto says fewer people statewide were registered to vote going into election day.

Long lines of last-minute wanna-be registrants and voters have been reported in places like The Loop, in Chicago.

It could be the first, and the last, time Illinois offers same-day registration on election day; a law passed near the end of the spring legislative session authorized it for this election only.
