The final resting place of Abraham Lincoln will be getting a make-over starting in October.
That means the tomb could be closed for up to 6 months.
Lincoln's tomb at the Oak Ridge Cemetery is also the resting place of his wife Mary Todd Lincoln and three of their four children.
The underground part of the monument has water damage and cracks, according to Chris Wills of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency:
WILLS: "It's a combination of cosmetic work, and minor structural things we want to get on top of before they become more serious ... We've got some plaster in disrepair and that needs to be taken care of. And in addition in some of the stone work there are small cracks."
Wills says $700,000 has been allocated from the state for the repairs. The top of the monument will remain open to the public.
In anticipation of the repairs, the Springfield Convention and Visitor's Bureau is not planning tours from October through April next year. Wills says the hope is for the tomb to be reopened in time for the anniversary of Lincoln's birthday on February 12th.
