PodCamp @ NPR Illinois

NPR Illinois PodCamp is a week-long, summer enrichment day camp for students ages 11 thru 14 interested in technology, journalism, and the exciting world of media. Each camper will interview an expert about a real topic, edit the interview, and explain what they learned in the first episode of their very own podcast. The students will be equipped with the skills to make more episodes after the week-long camp is over.

Students will learn to:

  • Use audio recording equipment
  • Use audio editing software
  • Use their own phone to record audio
  • Interview a subject
  • Write and record a narration
  • Speak clearly and confidently
  • Create a web story

NPR Illinois journalists will make appearances to talk about their area of expertise, lead a workshop with the campers, and answer questions about multimedia journalism.

PodCamp is held at the NPR Illinois 91.9 UIS studios on the campus of University of Illinois at Springfield. Camp runs Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 4 PM, with drop-off as early as 8:30am, and is limited to 24 campers. The curriculum is prepared by Ann Strahle, associate professor in communication at UIS. Ann and NPR Illinois staff members will instruct the camp with help from college students and other public media professionals.

Cost: $300
