Inara George and Greg Kurstin, the duo who make up The Bird and the Bee, hold enviable positions in the music industry. They've been featured in Apple spots, countless Judd Apatow films, and even a Yo Gabba Gabba episode, so you've almost certainly heard their music even if you may not recognize them. Out of the spotlight, Greg is one of pop music's hit-men of the moment, having worked with Sia, Lana Del Rey, and Kelly Clarkson, among many others; while Inara also juggles a solo career and a spot in the folk group, Living Sisters. They utilize their time together to make the music they want to make—projects like an album of Hall & Oates favorites (2010's Interpreting the Masters, vol. 1).
Their latest, Recreational Love, is a result of recording during recess from their day jobs and parental duties; and it's their best, most cohesive album to date, heavily influenced by 1980's R&B. As the title implies, the album is about unabashed fun, with the visuals for the title track no exception.
Says Kurstin, "Joe [Stakun, the director] really made the ultimate karaoke video. I feel like there's some humor to the song, but it still has a very universal meaning. It's kind of calling out those people who say, 'It's not you, it's me.'" Sing along and stick around for the surprise ending.
