Bruce Rushton On Police Violence And Body Cams

video captured by a body camera shows a police officer beating a resident of East Springfield

A video of Springfield police Officer Samuel Rosario beating up a 19 year old on the east side of Springfield has gone viral - it was captured by a body camera.
Bruce Rushton of the Illinois Times reported on the incident and studied the video - he has a blow by blow account of it here, where you can also watch the video. It contains many, many expletives from both parties, and obviously - violence. Rushton tells us body cameras have become a new tool in reporting, and have provided insight.
Officer Rosario has been put on unpaid leave, and faces charges of official misconduct and misdemeanor battery. Earlier this month, Rushton reported on Daniel Rogers, and the death he met after being shot several times by a police officer. Rogers had many run-ins with the law and was grappling with severe mental health issues. You'll hear about it in the interview, read the story here.

Rachel Otwell of the Illinois Times is a former NPR Illinois reporter.
