Event Description

While the University of Illinois celebrates its 150th year in 2017, it is also a time to celebrate the launch of the first book ever about the amazing PLATO system, developed from 1960 into the 1990s at the University of Illinois. Before the Internet, or AOL, or pretty much anything, the PLATO system evolved into the first thriving online community in 1973, with chat rooms, instant messaging, message forums, email, screen sharing, multiplayer games galore, and much more. This book will rewrite a lot of what we have taken for granted in the field of popular computing history. The real story is a lot more interesting, with many fascinating Illinois characters.
